Frequently Asked Questions

I’m new to Rhythm & Motion. How do I get started? It’s easy to get started! Just check the schedule at the Rhythm & Motion location near you, and sign up! Most studios offer a new student promotion - be sure to ask about it.

Do I need dance experience? Absolutely not! Rhythm & Motion was founded on the belief that “Anyone Can Dance,” and we’ve proven it with tens of thousands of students since 1979. Rhythm & Motion students come from all different backgrounds - from professional dancers that take class for fun cardio conditioning, to social dancers, to people who have never set foot inside a dance studio. Everyone is welcome, and anyone can dance!

Which class should I take? New students are welcome in all of our classes. If you are at a location that offers Essentials, it is a good place to start to get more breakdown of the Rhythm & Motion movement vocabulary.

What should I wear to class? Wear comfortable clothing that you can move and get sweaty in! As for footwear, some students wear athletic sneakers, dance sneakers or “dance paws,” and others choose to dance in socks or barefoot. Choose your footwear (or lack thereof) based on what feels right for you.

What should I bring with me to class? Did we mention you would sweat? Bring a towel and a bottle of water with you. If you have a bag with personal belongings, you may bring it into the studio with you (or, you may use a locker if they are available at your location).

Do the routines change from class to class? All instructors pull from a common library of music and choreography. While each class is unique, over time you will encounter familiar routines in different instructors’ classes.

How often should I come to class? Come to class as often as it feels good to you. To get more acquainted with the flow of the class, choreography and for the best cardio conditioning (and endorphins aplenty!), we recommend you come anywhere from 2-5 times per week.

Is it okay to modify movements to my own level of ability/fitness? While our teachers are known to be inspiring and push students to new places, you have the right to always do what you need for your own body. All of our teachers are knowledgeable and sensitive to a variety of body issues, injuries, and limitations. At Rhythm & Motion we encourage you to modify any movement and experience dance for your own particular body without judgment or pressure! And remember to drink lots of water!

Can I be exuberant in class? Our dance community respects diversity and enthusiasm. Our teachers are known for their infectious and giving spirits. We welcome students energizing our classes with their unique energy. Feel free to let out your joyfulness.

How much do classes cost? Class prices vary by location. All studios where Rhythm & Motion is taught offer both single drop-in rates as well as discounted class pass options. Some locations also offer discounts for students and/or seniors.

Can I use my class pass from one Rhythm & Motion location at another location? No. A class pass purchased at a particular studio may only be used at the location where it was purchased.

Is there an age limit/requirement? Rhythm & Motion classes are offered to adults. Teens may take class at some locations. Check with the studio for details.

Can I take class if I am pregnant? If you are pregnant, please check with your doctor before taking class, or engaging in any exercise program. Most pregnant women can take Rhythm & Motion classes safely, and any high-impact movements can be easily modified to low-impact. Let your instructor know if you are pregnant so that s/he can assist you with any modifications needed.

Do you offer private classes? We have organized private classes for business retreats, birthdays, and even bachelorette parties! If you are interested, please contact us for more information.

I have a few more questions. How can I contact you? We’d love to hear from you! Please contact us by phone at 415-549-8525, send us an email, or—if you are in the San Francisco Bay Area—stop by our office inside the ODC Dance Commons on Shotwell Street.
