Consuelo Faust, a native of New Orleans, founded Rhythm & Motion in 1979. Trained in ballet from an early age, Faust discovered modern dance as a high schooler, when she studied in New York with Phoebe Neville and Zena Romett. She also did workshops with Twyla Tharp, Alvin Ailey, and Yvonne Rainer at the American Dance Festival. In 1972, Faust joined San Francisco's Tumbleweed Dance and Music Collective, which pioneered the integration of contact improvisation with technical modern dance choreography. Tumbleweed was also known for reclaiming public spaces for dance. She then went on to found Consuelo Faust and Dancers, which challenged her to experiment with and refine her own choreography. This led to a number of collaborations and co-productions in the dance world, as well as roles in theater and film. Rhythm & Motion is a manifestation of her deep belief that “anyone can dance.”

With a lot of passion, and a lot less experience, Dudley Flores started his career in dance when Peter Rothblatt trained him to be a Rhythm & Motion instructor in 2000. After studying biology in college and a brief stint as a passenger service agent with American Airlines at SFO, he became a freelance “commercial” dancer and performed in large-scale corporate and fashion events, for television, commercials, print ads, and independent and feature films. Later, his focus turned toward contemporary dance where he performed nationally and internationally with prominent San Francisco choreographers and companies, including: Janice Garrett and Charles Moulton, Robert Moses’ KIN, ODC/Dance, Stacey Printz, KT Nelson, Nol Simonse, Paco Gomes, and Project B. In addition to Rhythm & Motion, Dudley is also on the production team with the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, sits on the Isadora Duncan Dance Award (“the Izzies”) committee, a collaborator with Latin Dance Grooves for San Francisco Carnaval and volunteers with various other dance organizations in the SF Bay Area.

Leigh has worked for over 20 years in the field of education and the arts. Following an earlier career as a classroom teacher, she served as Executive Director of the nationally acclaimed youth writing center 826 Valencia, and as Interim Director of the David Brower Center, Headlands Center for the Arts, and Southern Exposure. She has been an avid Rhythm & Motion student for several years, and joined the staff as Managing Director in 2015. Leigh lives in SF with her husband and two kids, who like to join her for impromptu dance parties in their kitchen most evenings of the week.

Janet Roitz has been with Rhythm and Motion as a teacher since 1991 and as Program Administrator since 2012. In addition to her love for R&M she is also a singer and an actor who has been in productions at ACT and The Magic Theater. She is the producer of a website, Fabulous Film Songs, which produces short documentaries and articles on songs featured in classic movies.

“When the idea for Rhythm & Motion came about, I really wanted to find a way to bring the joy of dance to people from all walks of life and build and enhance community through dance.”
