Women wear long, wide skirts that they hold and use to their advantage, and men wear white fisherman pants and a hay hat called sombrero vueltiao. Cumbia music is played by drums called Tambora, Alegre and Llamador, and a wind instrument called the Gaita. CURRULAO originated in Buenaventura, a port in the Pacific Coast of Colombia. It is a ritual of seduction between men and women. It was originally danced by Afro-Colombian people at the shores of rivers, during Colonial times. Women wear wide, long skirts and both men and women wear big hay hats and hold a handkerchief. The handkerchief is waved around by both partners in a sensual manner, as a symbol of seduction.
