Afro Colombian Workshop with Xiomara Salinas

Fridays 6:00pm - 7:30pm

Sept. 29th. - Dec. 9th.

This workshop will focus on Mapalé, a traditional Afro-Colombian dance brought to Cartagena, in the Atlantic Coast of Colombia more than 400 years ago by slaves from Guinea and Congo, Africa. It is characterized by frenetic and erotic movements comprised of a succession of jumps and falls, performed by men and women. Mapalé is also the name of a fish. Fishermen used to perform this dance after a good fishing day, and the dance’s movements represent the movements of a fish out of the water.

Xiomara Salinas was born and raised in Buenaventura and Cali, Colombia.  As a young girl she studied and performed Afro Colombian dance styles such as cumbia, mapale and currulao.  She also studied salsa, jazz, ballet, and modern with Maria Sanford, a renowned dance academy.  Soon she began appearing in popular TV shows. Later in the United States she studied a wider variety of sance styles at School of the Arts and at Mills College, where she was awarded a scholarship.  She is founder of Xiomara Dance Company.  Visit www.xiomara-salinas.com for more information.
